We've had garage sales here at Saint John's to raise money for some very worthy causes, including this summer's mission trip to Haiti. Community Church of the Open Door in Hampden, Maine, however, take an even more direct approach to helping their community. At their annual “Great Giveaway,” they give away items donated by church and community members for the effort. Nok-Noi Ricker wrote about this inspiring idea in the article “Hampden Open Door Church Holds Giveaway” from the Bangor Daily News.
In their promotion of the event, the church writes, “Hundreds of donated items will be given away, on a first-come, first-served basis, to individuals and families in need. From books and games to appliances; housewares and furniture to clothing; everything must go and everything is FREE!”
“Hesed” is a Hebrew word that means “kindness”, “mercy”, “loyalty”, “loving-kindness” or “steadfastness.” It’s the way God intends us to live together—a “love your neighbor as yourself”, active, selfless, sacrificial, caring-for-one-another brand of living contradictory to our fallen natures. The “Heseders” are continually looking to work together to share some small measure of God’s extraordinary love. Won’t you join us?
