The Heseders, Saint John’s mission team, are heading to Detroit July 16–22. We would love to have you to join us for this week of service at the LCMS’s newest Camp Restore base. We will have the opportunity to work with local Detroiters across a range of community-led volunteer projects. We will also take time to experience the food, music and history Detroit—The Motor City, Hockeytown, Motown, The D, Rock City and the Arsenal of Democracy—has to offer!

Our neighborhood is 75% unoccupied parcels, but that means we are 25% occupied homes! Many of those homeowners feel abandoned by their community. Our neighbors need to see Jesus’ presence for them in us!Rev. John Carrier, Pastor of Mount Calvary Lutheran, Detroit

The Heseders attempt to alternate between international missions and more “local” work in the United States. A servant event in Detroit is a more affordable option for volunteers, with easier travel arrangements and a smaller time commitment. It also gives us the opportunity to reach out and help our neighbors here so that together we may better serve our neighbors farther from home!

Please consider joining us this summer to help some of the people of Detroit. If interested, please contact Tom Miles (970-482-5316 or miles@StJohnsFC.org) by April 30.

“Hesed” is a Hebrew word that means “kindness,” “mercy,” “loyalty,” “loving-kindness” or “steadfastness.” It’s the way God intends us to live together—a “love your neighbor as yourself,” active, selfless, sacrificial, caring-for-one-another brand of living contradictory to our fallen natures. The “Heseders” are continually looking to work together to share some small measure of God’s extraordinary love. Won’t you join us?
