Again and again God rescued His chosen people. In Exodus 20, He makes a gracious covenant with them; since He has become their God by His grace, they shall be His people, having “no other gods” before Him. He is zealous for them, as a husband for his wife or a mother for her children. Jesus is likewise zealous for His Father’s house, the temple, because it was meant to be a place of divine grace and sabbath rest for His people, not a market. This same protective zeal is what would lead Him to give up the temple of His body to the destruction of the cross. This temple, though, is restored in three days!
