Elisha got a glimpse of God’s glory when Elijah was taken “up to heaven by a whirlwind.” Although the sky was lit like “chariots of fire and horses of fire,” Elisha saw his teacher taken up into heaven. Moses, too, stood in the presence of God on Mount Sinai. The people were terrified when he returned, for “the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.” He had to put on a veil before he could speak with them.

The veil between the people and God’s glorious and terrifying presence was finally lifted by Jesus. “Only through Christ is it taken away.” The disciples on the mount of Transfiguration saw Jesus shining in heavenly glory, standing with Moses and Elijah. But in this case, when the vision faded, they were still in the presence of God! “They no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.” Jesus is with us. His glory shines within us! God “has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
