When the crucified and risen Lord Jesus comes to judge the living and the dead, “He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” On His right He will place those who were crucified and raised with Him through faith in His Gospel and the waters of Holy Baptism. They are those justified by His grace, made righteous in Him. To these He will grant the Kingdom of His Father. On His left will be those who trusted in themselves and despised their neighbor. They, Jesus tells us, will depart “into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Until that day, the Lord searches for His sheep “as a shepherd looks after his scattered flock.” Through the preaching of repentance He disciplines the proud and the strong. Through the preaching of forgiveness He rescues the lost, binds up the injured and strengthens the weak. By His cross and resurrection He destroys the power of death, so that “in Christ all will be made alive.
