Michelle Howard, along with her three children, will be the happy homeowner of the newest Thrivent/Habitat home in Fort Collins. Construction is well underway in Rigden Farm, but there are still many work hours left to get the home completed.
Saint John’s has committed to helping with both construction and fundraising for this project. Many Lutheran volunteers, especially Thrivent members, are needed. Work days are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Even if you are inexperienced in construction, you are welcome to come and pick up some skills from others at the job site. If you are able to commit to helping with the construction of this home, please contact Leon Knox at 226-3106.
Lunches are provided by partnering churches on Saturdays. Saint John’s will be serving a few of these lunches, and your help is also needed to prepare and serve the food!
Donations of cash will be most welcome, as Saint John’s has set a goal of raising $1,000 toward the cost of the home. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, through its “Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity” program, contributes 55% of the construction costs. Habitat for Humanity covers another 35% of the cost, leaving the last 10% for Saint John’s and the partnering churches in the North Larimer County Chapter of Thrivent.
Habitat homes are not a giveaway. Families are chosen based on their level of need, but also based on their willingness to partner in the program with several hundred hours of sweat equity, to attend a financial management course and to raise a down payment and then repay the no-interest loan they receive from Habitat for Humanity. Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity writes,
Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity is an affordable homeownership program. Our goal is to help families living on modest incomes realize the full financial and social benefits of owning their own home. Additionally, each Habitat Homeowner has the satisfaction of knowing that their monthly mortgage payments contribute to building even more homes for future Habitat Homeowners.
