Dorothy Benedict was born on June 6, 1923 and baptized June 10. She has been a long time member of Saint John’s, joining our congregation in 1939. She has fond memories of Saint John’s, saying it was always a good church with “marvelous ministers who took good care of us”. She feels that we all “need a boost every Sunday” so she was a regular participant most of her life. Dorothy remembers her children playing with the Jorgensens’ kids. They enjoyed being in the church as a family and both she and her children sang in the choir. Dorothy also was a Sunday School teacher and active member of the Saint John’s Lutheran Ladies Auxiliary. She was on the Board of Education and loved to hand paint China dishes.

Dorothy was born in Brighton, Colorado. She moved with her parents and two brothers to Fort Collins during her school years, graduating from Fort Collins High School. She attended CSU and University of Michigan, becoming a nurse and working for twenty years at Poudre Valley Hospital. She felt it was a good hospital and related that she was hired the same day she applied for a job there. She worked in the operating room and a variety of settings at PVH. She was also a nurse manager during part of her career. The staff at PVH was “the cream of the crop” in her estimation. As a retiree, Dorothy worked as a Pink Lady volunteer at the hospital for many years.

Dorothy married Marion Benedict on January 6, 1946. They were together for over sixty years before he passed away. Marion ran a family upholstery business. She relates that they had a good life, many good times and still speaks in terms of “we”. She is proud of her four children, three of whom live in Colorado. They all played sports in school and Dorothy was glad for the good schools and good teams her children benefitted from. Dorothy speaks glowingly of her ten grandchildren and three great grands. They are all good and fun kids, in Dorothy’s opinion.

Currently Dorothy lives in Collinwood at 5055 South LeMay. Note that she will turn 90 in June! While she does not have a phone, she loves company and especially enjoys visits from her church family. Her main pastime is reading books, which she does every day. Dorothy’s son, James brings her to church. She continues to treasure her worship “boost” at Saint John’s.
