Open Arms hopes everyone is having a really great summer and staying cool.
We still have openings in both the Tuesday/Thursday Preschool class for 3- and 4-year old children and in the Monday, Wednesday, Friday Pre-K class for 4- and 5-year old children. We would love to have full classes again this year, so your help in spreading the word about our program would be much appreciated!
Thank you for your support in purchasing the Gulley’s Greenhouse gift cards. The preschool received 20% from the cards that were purchased.
Here are a few ideas to keep your children entertained for the rest of the long summer days:
Listening/Feeling Walk: While on a walk outside, stop and ask your child to listen carefully. Then ask your child to describe the sounds he or she hears. Stop several times to touch and feel different things such as a fuzzy leaf, prickly needles on a spruce tree, cool water, rough tree bark, or warm pavement. Gather some nature objects along the way and make a nature collage when you return home.
Ball in the Bucket: Get ready for some outdoor fun! Fill a bucket with water. Give your child a ball and let him or her practice throwing it into the bucket. The splashes will reward your child’s accurate throw. Use sponges to throw into the bucket, then play catch with the soaking wet sponges.
Eating Colors: Serve a meal or a snack with emphasis on color. Try cranberry juice, cherry gelatin and tomato for red; limeade, spinach noodles and chocolate chip mint ice cream for green; pineapple juice, lemon pudding and egg salad for yellow; or oranges, carrots and orange juice for orange.
Sun Prints: Set pieces of dark construction paper in direct sunlight. Let your child arrange objects, such as pencils, blocks, and small toy cars, on the papers. At the end of the day, have your child remove the objects and observe what happened to the papers. Which parts are lighter than others? Why?
Fun With Mud: Let your child use a kitchen baster to add water to some dirt to make mud. Let him or her be creative with the mud. What happens when you add more dirt? What happens when you add more water? How does the mud feel? Is it cold, warm, squishy, smooth, rough?
Recycled Vase: Rinse out an empty 1-liter plastic bottle. Discard the cap and remove the label. Let your child decorate the bottle with permanent markers, stickers, or glued on pieces of tissue paper. Then use it for a flower arrangement, using either fresh, dried, or artificial flowers.
Paper Towel Designs: Pour water into several small containers and add a different color of food coloring to each one. Let your child dip a brush into the colored water and paint designs on a paper towel. When the paper towel is completely soaked, hang it up to dry and give your child another towel to paint.
Tuna Dip: Stir together ½ cup mayonnaise, ½ cup plain yogurt, 1 pint cottage cheese, and 1 can (6 1/8 ounce) water-packed tuna, drained. Refrigerate for ½ hour. Serve with raw vegetables, crackers, or bread sticks.
God made each of us special, so tell your child why they are special and have them tell you why you are special. Think of ten words for each letter of the alphabet. Tell about something that made you sad, happy, or made you feel silly.
Thank God for freedom! Thank God for your family! Thank God for your church and your pastor! I thank God for this opportunity to share God’s love with you and with the children and their families at Open Arms Preschool!
