Because God “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth,” He urges “that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.” The Lord will not forget “the poor of the land,” even we who turn against Him. Though we try to justify ourselves, God knows our sinful hearts and calls us to repentance. He justifies us by His grace alone and welcomes us into His eternal dwelling. In turn, He requires the stewards of His Gospel to bestow forgiveness freely.

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” Having lost even a single sheep, the great Good Shepherd, Christ Jesus, will “leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it.” He says “I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak.” When He finds the lost one and brings it home, the angels and all the company of heaven rejoice with Him, with great joy.

Discipleship is costly because it crucifies the old Adam in order to be raised up in Christ. The disciple disavows “his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life” in deference to Christ. Seems impossible—and in fact it is, except that Christ Jesus has already paid the cost. To take up His cross in love is to “choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying His voice and holding fast to Him.”

“Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Our hope is in the name of the Lord, who humbled Himself unto death on the cross and was exalted in His resurrection. Because of His sacrifice, the Son tells each of us, “Friend, move up higher.” As He has dealt so graciously with you, “do not neglect to do good and to share what you have” and “do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.” Humble yourself and exalt your neighbor.

The sign of the cross is set forth in the preaching of the Gospel, the declaration of the Lord’s glory among the nations. Many will come “from east and west, and from north and south,” but only by the narrow way of the cross. These, Christ’s disciples called from all the nations, will eat and drink with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of God. They will come into “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.”
