Michelangelo was once asked what he was creating as he chipped away at a shapeless rock. He replied, “I am liberating an angel from this stone.” God is doing the same with us. Paul tells us in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God has a purpose for us to fulfill.
Christ Jesus has created you as His work of art for good works. He has a plan for your life. Are you finding it? Or are you wandering through life saying, “I’ve been saved by God, so that takes care of that. Now let me get on with what I really want to do”?
The wording of Ephesians 2:10 is very important. We were “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God is going ahead of us, preparing the way, so that the work we do may fulfill His plan for us. Even when there are setbacks in life, God is still working through, in and around us.
Years after Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt, he met them once again. Although he was second-incommand in Egypt, Joseph did not use his power and position to exact revenge. Despite his exile, heartache, unjust imprisonment and all his other problems, he said to them, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20)
Your heavenly Father has prepared the way for you, too. Maybe you are facing a crisis in your life. Maybe it seems as though nothing is ever going to change. Remember: you are under construction. Don’t resist what Christ is trying to do. Let Him have His way with you. His motive is always based on His love for you.
You may look at yourself and say, “My life doesn’t look like a work of beauty.” God says, “Hang on! You are a work in progress. In fact, I won’t be completely finished with you until you get to heaven.” Then you will see yourself for who you really are—God’s masterpiece!
