The Lord visited Abraham and received his hospitality, but Abraham received a much greater gift: the gracious promise of a son. Mary and Martha were also blessed by a visit from God. Jesus received Martha’s hospitality, though she was “distracted with much serving.” But Mary “sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to His teaching.” The service of love is no sin, but “one thing is necessary” for both faith and love: the word of Christ.

The Law commands that “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart … and your neighbor as yourself.” Christ Jesus demonstrated this love; with divine compassion He saved us from all evil, taking our sin and death upon Himself and bearing them to the cross. He binds up our wounds with the healing balm of His Gospel and brings us into His Church, where He cares for us at His own expense. He tells us to “go, and do likewise,” and by faith we share this love with our neighbor.

Christ sends out His messengers like lambs in the midst of wolves. Our only advantage is the sacrifice of His cross, by which God’s kingdom has come near; we do not “boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Wherever this Gospel enters, Satan is cast out “like lightning from heaven.” Then, beneath the cross of Jesus, we are restored: satisfied with the pure milk of the Word and enabled by the Holy Spirit to “bear one another’s burdens” in love.

When Elijah despaired for his life, the Lord made Himself known to the prophet not in wind, earthquake or fire, but in a whisper. Today God whispers through His messengers who prepare the way for Him, those who put their hand to the plow of preaching, who proclaim the kingdom of God without looking back. They preach that despite the power of the Law, with its “yoke of slavery,” Christ has set us free by the power of God, achieving our salvation through the Gospel of forgiveness.

The Lord calls even those who do not seek Him or ask for Him. He spreads out His hands and invites them to dwell in peace upon His holy mountain. We who are enslaved by the assaults of the devil are set free by the Word of Christ. We are brought into the Lord’s house, fully clothed in Christ; He has fulfilled the Law on our behalf, redeemed us from its every accusation, justified us by His grace through faith in His Gospel and declared each of us “no longer a slave, but God’s child.”
